Say No To Bigotry: The Truth Behind Syrian Refugee Resettlement in the U.S.
As your constituent, I urge you to uphold the American tradition of opening our nation’s doors to the world’s most vulnerable populations. Since the outbreak of the conflict in Syria, the U.S. has resettled a total of 1,854 Syrian refugees. Despite being the worst humanitarian disaster of our time, and the worst since World War II, the amount of Syrian refugees admitted to the U.S. since 2011 make up less than 1 percent of refugees accepted. Part of the problem in taking in more Syrian refugees has been that an unprecedented movement of public officials, presidential candidates and pundits are framing this dire humanitarian crisis as a national security concern. These claims have been feverishly renewed today because of the tragic terrorist attacks that recently occurred in Paris, France. These individuals are seeking to use the heart wrenching events that transpired in Paris as a political tool with which to close our doors to Syrian refugees. Time and time again, government officials from the Department of Homeland Security and Department of State have stated that the U.S. is home to one of the world’s toughest, if not the toughest, refugee vetting processes. Not only would adopting such a policy, which is based off of false information, be morally wrong, it also flies in the face of our country’s values. I ask you, as my elected representative, to reject the politics of bigotry and fear mongering and to support the U.S’ historical tradition of providing refuge for those most in need.
