The Attorney General of the United States has broad authority to shape our nation’s federal rights agenda through the Department of Justice. This covers everything from civil rights and voting rights to counter-terrorism policy, hate crimes, and police brutality.

Senator Jeff Sessions’ record raises concerns about how he might use his discretion as Attorney General to enforce equal protection of the law for all Americans.

Given the reported involvement of Senator Sessions in President Trump’s extreme executive orders on immigration and refugees (in practice a Muslim ban), we request that the committee hold a second hearing with Senator Sessions to re-evaluate the position of the nominee on the extraordinary claims of executive authority, the President’s call for an investigation into voter fraud, and the grave dangers to civil liberties and civil rights, posed by the actions taken and proposed by President Donald Trump over the past five days. The Senate should vigorously question the role of Senator Sessions played in developing these new orders and proposals and his plans to implement and execute them.
