The Aviation Consumer Protection Division received 37 percent more reports of discrimination on our nation’s airlines in 2016 than the previous year. Incidents include passengers being removed for merely speaking Arabic, simply wearing hijab, or for being suspected of having Arabic content on their computer. Despite the increase in complaints of ethnic and religious discrimination, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has no requirements for airlines to train staff to address discriminatory profiling and targeting by airline employees. To address this problem, Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey successfully included language in S.1405, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Reauthorization Bill, to require a Government Accountability Office (GAO) report and the development of Department of Transportation best practices with respect to training policies regarding racial, ethnic and religious nondiscrimination.

Senator Booker’s amendment will require the federal government to report on each airline’s training policy regarding racial, ethnic, and religious diversity. Once the report is submitted, the Booker amendment would also require the Transportation Department to develop best practices to improve training throughout the airline industry.

Please take a few minutes to do the following right now:
