On Monday, the Arab American Institute joined nearly 200 civil and human rights, civil liberties, education, social justice, and inter-faith organizations to urge President Obama to take immediate action to rescind the regulatory framework behind the National Security Exit-Entry Registration System (NSEERS).

NSEERS was a Bush-era counter-terrorism program that registered thousands of immigrants - the overwhelming majority from Arab and Muslim-majority countries. NSEERS was a clear example of profiling: discriminatory, arbitrary and ineffective. On Monday, the Arab American Institute joined nearly 200 civil and human rights, civil liberties, education, social justice, and inter-faith organizations to urge President Obama to take immediate action to rescind the regulatory framework behind the National Security Exit-Entry Registration System (NSEERS).

NSEERS was a Bush-era counter-terrorism program that registered thousands of immigrants - the overwhelming majority from Arab and Muslim-majority countries. NSEERS was a clear example of profiling: discriminatory, arbitrary and ineffective. Families were torn apart, small businesses in immigrant neighborhoods closed their doors, and students discarded their educational aspirations. Beyond the human toll it took, NSEERS cost millions and did not see a single terrorism conviction.

With the original architect of NSEERS heading the President-Elect’s immigration transition team, NSEERS could be reinstated.

Now is the time to ask the Obama administration to remove the regulatory framework for NSEERS during the lame duck period and prevent this flawed policy from being brought back.
